Howth Cliff Walk

A coastal walk with spectacular sea views, just 40 minutes from Dublin city center.

Description of the place

The Howth Cliffs are part of one of the most beautiful and accessible walking routes in the Dublin area. The most popular trail is the Howth Cliff Walk of approximately 4 km, which starts near Howth Harbour and winds along the coast with incredible views of the Irish Sea, Baily Lighthouse and, on clear days, even the Wicklow Mountains.

The trail has easy, well-marked sections, although there are moderate climbs and dirt paths in some areas, so comfortable shoes are recommended. Along the way, you'll see typical cliff vegetation, seabirds, and, in spring and summer, wildflowers. There are also benches where you can sit and enjoy the scenery. It's ideal for a half-day getaway, especially if you combine the walk with a visit to the picturesque town of Howth and its harbor.

Howth is easily accessible by DART train from Dublin city centre in about 30-40 minutes.

Wear comfortable shoes and a windproof jacket, even in summer. The 4km route can be completed in 1h30 without rushing. If you want to avoid steep climbs, choose the short circular route and walk only to the lighthouse from the highest point. On the way back, take the opportunity to have lunch at one of the port restaurants or try some classic fish & chips. Don't forget to check the weather forecast before you set out. Nothing worse than getting caught in a downpour halfway through your hike! (I speak from experience 🙂 )
